4038 Egg-cellent Eggs

Well, if you didn't know, we bought a quail farm back at the end of last year and my hard working husband has been going full-steam since to get the place up and running after sitting empty for nearly a year. It has been a lot of manual labor to clean up the dust, eradicate a major rat infestation, scrape up a cat carcass, plus sort out/fix equipment, take down old buildings, clean out and organize multiple barns, hire employees, and basically learn how to run a quail farm. Throw in a 40 minute one-way commute and continuing to manage a whole other business and it hasn't been easy, but he is doing a great job!

(Now you know why he needed the new truck.)

Today was a major milestone in the life of Bandera Quail at Diamond H Ranch - we received our first eggs! 4038 eggs to be exact. These are Bobwhite quail, or the flight birds, raised for sale to hunting preserves. I raced down with the boys this afternoon to get a look before they were all safely tucked away in the incubators. (We will also eventually have Coturnix quail as a meat bird to supply restaurants and quail lovers, but that will come later.) The boys liked being down on the farm and working with Daddy of course. They were very quick to help and relatively gentile. Someday sorting all these eggs and loading up incubators will probably be their actual job.

As you can imagine, this is a really exciting, but daunting venture for us. A big step in expanding our "Game Meat Empire" as Chris joked the other night.

Right now it is a lot of work and a lot of faith.

Encouraging is the amount of success the previous owner had and the daily calls we get from past customers wanting to know if we have birds yet. To boost morale even more, Chris made the first pre-sale of flight birds just last week. More updates will be coming and as soon as the website is up and running I will post a link.
